Diagenetic controls on fluid flow and mechanical properties in Rotliegend reservoir sandstones

The book focuses on the diagenetic processes and their impact on fluid flow and mechanical properties in Rotliegend reservoir sandstones. The Rotliegend sandstones are an important reservoir in the subsurface of Northwestern Europe, and understanding the diagenetic controls on fluid flow and mechanical properties is crucial for efficient hydrocarbon production. The study utilizes petrographic analysis, including thin section microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, to investigate the diagenetic alterations in the sandstones. Various diagenetic processes, such as compaction, cementation, and dissolution, are examined in detail. The results show that the diagenetic alterations significantly influence the fluid flow behavior and mechanical properties of the sandstones. Compaction and cementation reduce the primary porosity, while dissolution can enhance the porosity and permeability. Furthermore, the study investigates the relationship between diagenetic alterations and mechanical properties, such as rock strength and deformation behavior. It is found that cementation and compaction generally increase the rock strength, while dissolution weakens the rock structure. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the diagenetic controls on fluid flow and mechanical properties in Rotliegend reservoir sandstones. This knowledge can be applied to improve reservoir characterization and prediction of hydrocarbon production behavior in similar sandstone reservoirs.
