Serviceability and post-failure behaviour of laminated glass structural elements

Lorenzo Ruggero Piscitelli - Nama Orang;

Laminated glass has gained significant attention in the field of structural engineering due to its unique properties such as enhanced transparency, improved safety, and increased resistance to impact and weather conditions. However, the serviceability and post-failure behavior of laminated glass structural elements remain relatively unexplored. This research aims to investigate the serviceability performance of laminated glass structural elements under various loading conditions and to analyze their behavior after failure. The study includes both experimental and numerical investigations to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Experimental tests are conducted on full-scale laminated glass beams, columns, and panels to assess their load-carrying capacity, deflection behavior, and failure mechanisms. The effects of different design parameters, such as glass thickness, interlayer material, and boundary conditions, are considered to evaluate their influence on the serviceability performance. In addition to experimental investigations, numerical simulations using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are employed to model the behavior of laminated glass structural elements. The FEA models are validated against experimental results and utilized to study the behavior of laminated glass under various loadings, including static, dynamic, and impact loads. Moreover, the post-failure behavior of laminated glass structural elements is thoroughly examined. The study investigates the residual strength, stiffness degradation, and failure modes of laminated glass components after initial failure. This knowledge is crucial for understanding the safety implications and potential risks associated with the use of laminated glass in structural applications. The findings of this research will contribute to the development of design guidelines and recommendations for the serviceability and post-failure behavior of laminated glass structural elements. These guidelines will aid architects, engineers, and construction professionals in designing safe and reliable laminated glass structures.
