Mastering technical communication skills : a student's handbook
The word mastering in the handbook title is essential to the view
of structuring an organization and involves a genuine effort to
write an ambitious handbook. Students have, for a long time, asked
themselves about the motivation to take a specific course, attend
a seminar, or prepare a laboratory moment in their active student
educational programs. As a professor, and for a period the dean
of faculty at a progressive university, with a record of spirit and
entrepreneurship, I am still astonished at the conservative structure
of today’s educational institutions. I have many times experienced
a motivation problem by students for having just this specific
knowledge, and to be really honest I have sometimes asked myself
the same questions. A student’s reluctance is, in many situations, a
genuine doubt about the usefulness of a specific course or section
of a course. Students are sincerely concerned about the quality
of university courses given and the possibility to make use of the
education.
The university structure and choice of educational programs,
courses, and required knowledge are pretty much uniform in type,
length, and content over the world. However, the benefits may lie
in the possibility to evaluate, control, and compare education. But
this structure also gives rise to a number of limitations, where
values like alteration, innovation, and multiplicity are often part of a
dynamics in an education that should reflect society in general and
technological developments specifically. The need for a more flexible
view of what a student should bring with him or her when entering
society outside the university is of utmost importance when it
directly will affect the student’s ability to get a job as well as society
to take advantage of new and fresh competence.
viii Preface
I have had an ambition to somehow, in a small step, redirect or
rather complement the educational programs at the university level
toward more future-oriented course alternatives. This would then
also include interactions with students and their experiences. The
young generation is known to be updated with all the technology
trends actually pushing developments, for example, mobile phones,
social media, and computer performance. To use past knowledge
and trend analysis with today’s experiences and create a starting
point for estimating the required knowledge of tomorrow, that is,
the period when a student is active on the market, has been my
vision for educational development.
This handbook is considered one minor step to fulfilling the
need for involving technology-driven knowledge with personal
skills to achieve a student’s requirement to be involved in a future
society.
The strategy when writing this handbook has constantly been
to follow the intention to focus on the primary concept from a
student’s point of view that easily can be read at the reader’s
convenience.
I hope that this handbook will be an inspiration source for
anyone who has an interest in an emerging educational area of great
importance. Although I foresee that students in various academic
societies will frequently use this handbook as an inspiration source
to further discussions and entrepreneurial ideas, other interested
young people are welcome to use the advice in communication skills
needed for an active life in society.
It is clear view that by mastering technology-related skills and
using them as a way to improve communication and interaction with
others, students will profit by increasing their ability to take part
and act in a future society. The handbook is an introductory part of
an inspiration guide that can be used by anyone, even if my ambition
is to use this handbook as an important tool in a corresponding
educational program at the university level.
I sincerely hope that as many students as possible get an
opportunity to make use of this handbook and enhance their skills.
The student will most likely meet the complex and, indeed, fuzzy
expectations that a future employer may have, in order to be able to
achieve highly skilled job opportunities.
Preface ix
Finally the content in this handbook may be condensed into the
following three sentences:
Skill is about people meeting other people, mastering
communicating ideas. This is the incentive that drives technology
forward. I just encourage that combination.
