Urban Agriculture in Public Space : Planning and Designing for Human Flourishing in Northern European Cities and Beyond
Urban agriculture in public space has increasingly gained attention as a strategy for planning and designing cities that promote human flourishing. In Northern European cities and beyond, urban agriculture functions not only as a source of local food production but also as a means of enhancing environmental quality, social cohesion, and public health. This study explores the role of urban agriculture in public spaces as an integral component of sustainable and inclusive urban planning and design. By examining practices, policies, and spatial design approaches that integrate agricultural activities into public realms, the paper demonstrates how urban agriculture contributes to food security, strengthens human–nature relationships, and encourages community participation in urban development. The findings highlight the importance of urban agriculture as a key element in creating resilient, sustainable, and human-centered cities.
